Section 1 - Purpose

(1) Charles Sturt University (the University) wishes to create opportunities for established, practising, creative and performing artists to work for relatively short periods at the University, and to engage with students and the community.

Section 2 - Glossary

(2) For the purpose of this Policy:

1. Artist-in-Residence – means a creative person who for a set period by invitation or application, practises in a space away from their usual environment and obligations, engaging in activities of reflection, research, presentation, production, and student and community engagement.

Section 3 - Policy

(3) This Policy should be read in conjunction with the University’s Intellectual Property Policy, as an Artist-in-Residence is taken to be a “Visitor” under the Intellectual Property Policy.

(4) In any one year, the University may be in a position to invite practising:

1. artists, working in the fields of visual arts including fine art, design, photography and animation;
2. musicians, including music educators, choir masters, composers, and instrumentalists;
3. actors, producers, stage designers and media specialists;
4. writers; and
5. artists practising in a field apposite to an approved course of the University.

(5) An appointment as an Artist-in-Residence is primarily intended to provide an opportunity for the artist to practise a particular skill within the environment provided by a university committed to a range of professional courses in the creative industries or in other disciplines. Artists-in-Residence while practising, will be expected to work within the University and to provide opportunities by all reasonable means for students to learn and to become involved with the professional work of the artist. This involvement may take the form of practical demonstrations, lectures, tutorials, recitals or other performances, but equally, the involvement may be of an informal kind, such as working in studios or theatres concurrently with students.

(6) In addition to working with enrolled students of the University, opportunities may be presented for Artists-in-Residence to offer or participate in public lectures, workshops and short-term schools as part of a general program of education arranged by the hosting School/Faculty, Manager Community Relations, Heads of Campus, or the Division of Learning and Teaching. Such activities may be arranged at weekends and the late afternoons or evenings, or outside the regular Charles Sturt University semesters.

Part A - Terms of Appointment

(7) An appointment as Artist-in-Residence shall be for a period as determined by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) in consultation with the relevant Executive Dean, but generally not less than one day or more than a semester.

(8) Artists-in-Residence will be paid an appropriate stipend under the academic salary scales, approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

(9) In addition to the stipend, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) may approve of the University meeting the costs of travel up to the cost of a return airfare to a domestic campus (as appropriate) from the normal place of residence for the artist, and in addition making a contribution towards the costs of accommodation, sustenance and incidental expenses. The artist may be expected to meet the costs of any consumables used during the residence, although in some circumstances the University may contribute to some or all of these consumables.

(10) Artists-in-Residence will be expected to arrange their own living accommodation, as well as to accept full responsibility for the security and safeguard of the artist's work, personal effects and equipment.

(11) The University shall be allowed the first opportunity to buy any works completed while the artist is in residence, at prices mutually agreed upon.

(12) Artists-in-Residence shall be responsible to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) through the relevant Executive Dean during the period of the residence.

(13) The University reserves the right to terminate an appointment as an Artist-in-Residence with one week's notice and to withhold any stipend that may have been due after the expiration of the period of notice.
