Higher Doctorate Policy

Section 1 - Introduction

(1) These regulations apply to the award of (Earned) Higher Doctorates to graduates on the basis of work submitted by a graduate for such an award. The regulations do not apply to the award of Honorary Higher Doctorates which the Council may confer in accordance with its "Policy for the Award of Honorary Degrees" (BG 91/75 and BG 93/93).

Section 2 - Higher Doctorate Awards

(2) Charles Sturt University (the University) may, in accordance with these regulations, award the following Higher Doctorates:

  1. Doctor of Letters - DLitt;
  2. Doctor of Science - DSc.

Section 3 - Requirements for the Award

Graduate Standing

(3) To qualify for consideration for the award of a Higher Doctorate, the applicant must be a graduate of Charles Sturt University or of another recognised university.

Charles Sturt University Graduates

(4) A graduate of Charles Sturt University will be considered for a Higher Doctorate if the graduate has held the degree of Bachelor for at least ten years or the degree of Master for at least seven years or the degree Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent Professional Doctorate for at least five years; and the graduate has worked continuously in the field relevant to the award since graduation.

Graduates of Other Universities

(5) A graduate of another recognised university will be considered for a Higher Doctorate if the graduate has held the degree of Bachelor for at least ten years or the degree of Master for at least seven years or the degree Doctor of Philosophy or an equivalent Professional Doctorate for at least five years; and the graduate has carried out a substantial part of the work submitted for the award of a Higher Doctorate at or in connection with Charles Sturt University.

The Nature of the Work

Quality of the Work

(6) The work submitted for the award of a Higher Doctorate must be a substantial and scholarly contribution to the advancement of the relevant field of learning, surpassing the standard of work required for the award of Doctor of Philosophy.

Published Work

(7) The work submitted for the award of a Higher Doctorate will normally be a "published work" in that the work will have been available publicly for a reasonable period of time for review and criticism.

Unpublished Work

(8) The University may consider for the award of a Higher Doctorate, an unpublished work if the University is satisfied that the work does not lend itself to publication as broadly defined in clause 7.

Collaborative Work

(9) Collaborative work may be considered for the award of a Higher Doctorate if the applicant submitting the work is the substantive contributor to the work.

Previously Submitted Work

(10) The work submitted for the award of a Higher Doctorate must not have been the basis upon which the applicant was awarded any other degree from Charles Sturt University or any other university but may be work that follows on from work submitted for another degree.

Presentation of the Work

(11) An applicant for the award of a Higher Doctorate will submit to the University for examination, the following materials:

  1. the work itself in printed form or if not in printed form, in a form approved by the Executive Dean of the relevant Faculty;
  2. a signed 500 word (approximate) summary of the work which details the extent to which the work is original work and, in the case of collaborative work, the extent of the applicant's contribution to the work;
  3. a bibliography of 9 articles in which the submitted work has been reviewed or criticised and a 200 word (approximate) abstract of each article;
  4. a signed statement that the work has not previously been successfully submitted for the award of a degree from Charles Sturt University or any other university and that it is not currently under consideration by any other university for an award.

Section 4 - Applications for the Award of a Higher Doctorate

Research Office

(12) Applications for the award of a Higher Degree must be lodged with the Research Office in accordance with clause 11. Such applications may be lodged at any time.

(13) The Research Office will check that the application conforms to clause 11 and will then refer the application to the relevant Executive Dean.

Faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee

(14) The Executive Dean will refer the application to the Faculty's Higher Degrees and Research Committee which may:

  1. seek further information from the applicant;
  2. decline to support the application in which case the Committee will forward the application to the Research Committee giving reasons for the Committee's decision; or
  3. agree that the application should proceed in which case the Committee will forward the application to the Research Committee with the names and background information of three persons recommended as examiners of the work.

Research Committee

(15) Upon receiving an application for the award of a Higher Doctorate, the Research Committee may:

  1. refer the application back to the Faculty's Higher Degrees and Research Committee for further advice; or
  2. appoint examiners to examine the work.

Section 5 - Examination of a Work for a Higher Doctorate

(16) Section 8: Examination of the Thesis or Portfolio in the Higher Degree by Research Policy - Examinable Works and Examination will apply to the examination of a work for the award of a Higher Doctorate except that clauses relating to the minor revision, major revision, resubmission or re-examination of the thesis shall not apply.
